And just why is Wester Ross called Wester Ross? The name Ross, derived from Rois (meaning a headland) was probably first applied to promontories of land on the east coast and then came to be extended across the whole region to the west. Although still Ross-shire, this region became known as Ross & Cromarty in 1698 when George MacKenzie, who owned lands throughout the area, succeeded in having his own lands recognised as a separate county of Cromarty.
