Mountain Biking in Wester Ross

track

The rugged landscapes of Wester Ross provide loads of mountain biking. While it might be true that you'll have to be fit and perhaps need a little bit of handling skill to get the most out of it, Wester Ross really is one of the most rewarding places in Britain to head for with a mountain bike. Places to think about riding are the area round Glen Torridon and Loch Maree/Gairloch.

track For riders operating at a beginner to intermediate level, the out and back trip to Loch na-h-Oidhche, just outside Gairloch should be high on anybody's list. Navigation is dead easy and simply a matter of following your front wheel to the loch and then reversing the route. There are a couple of sections where those without the puff may need to dismount and walk but they are relatively short. The consolation is that these stretches will provide downhill thrills on the return leg. Once at the loch there is the option to press on to the bothy at Poca Buidhe for a touch of real remoteness and truly stunning views of the Torridon hills.
track More able riders should not dismiss the previous route. The optional extras, and the numerous features that others might ride round, make it trip where real skill can be exercised if you want to or set aside for another day by using the easier lines. Anyway, the scenery alone is more than enough to justify visiting it. However, should you be looking for something altogether more demanding then the loop from Glen Torridon, by Loch Coulin, Down Coire Lair and then back to Annat via coire Fionnaraich has few equals. It has everything an experienced rider could hope for. It's simply a stunning circuit in every way and should not be missed if you have the legs and the necessary ability.
